So the leaked images of the codex have started to hit the Internet and early predictions are already spreading across the Internet fast. Overall many people are complaining about the lack of various wish listing but we shall reserve complete judgement until after the codex arrives.

The big list of fixes/hopes I had for this codex:

1) Help out Tyranid Warriors (either Eternal Warrior or T5 W2)
2) Fix the Trygon Tunnel
3) Make all units playable (Pyrovores, Lictors in particular)
4) Reduce costs for overpriced units (Carnifex, Lictors, Tyrannofex)
5) Greater genetic mutation within broods (i.e. +2 save Carnifex armor, toxin sacs and adrenal for Raveners, etc).
6) Anti-air options
7) Increased Force Org chart due to lack of allies
8) Exciting new wargear
9) Bring back horde style of play
10) Make assault a bit more viable

To begin, the leaked images for the Psychic powers and Warlord traits have made me lose faith in the designers at GW. The traits are mostly worthless and the Psychic powers are underwhelming (Catalyst being the only real winner). The big change is that Tyranid psykers (Tyrants, Tervigons, Zoanthropes, Swarmlord) have no access to the rulebook powers!! (facepalm) The commander items again were mostly a disappointment. I will wait on full analysis until point values are released. Already this isn't turning out to be a good start to a codex that I have had such high hopes for...

Units Not in Codex:
Doom of Malanti - (THANK YOU GOD - I hate broken units)
Spore Pod - (GW doesn't release a model, thousands of people make custom made ones. GW's response?? Go **** yourselves!!! HAHAHA!!!!)
Parasite of Mortrex - (didn't care either way)
Ymgarl Genestealers - (No more units that can assault the turn they appear. Just another way of GW saying shooting is king and I should play Tau/Eldar)

So lets begin the initial analysis...

HQ

Hive Tyrant
Stats = same
Points = -5
Upgrades: Wings are 25 pts cheaper, no more +2 upgrade. Mastery level 2. commander upgrades remain although costs decrease. No more access to rulebook psychic powers. 2 sets of Scything talons standard.
Thoughts: No more rulebook powers (a.k.a. Biomancy) hurts a lot. Cheaper wings is nice, with Devourers with B.L. having not changed in stats (lost the Ld modifier.... whoopee!!). Overall meh. The cheaper wing upgrade will help reduce costs but overall the loss of access to Biomancy has hurt the Tyrant in drastic ways.

Swarmlord
Stats = same
Points = +5
Upgrades: Loses re-roll of successful opponent invulnerable saves. Grants 1 ability to brood remains largely the same (removes Night Vision with Monster Hunter). Master level 3. Has the Apex Biomorph that increases synapse to 18".
Thoughts: Still a good beatstick and heavy hitter. Still suffers for speed but overall not much change. Loss of re-roll for opponent sucks but won't stop me from running him.

Tervigon
Stats = +1 I
Points = +30
Upgrades: Mastery Level 1. Need 30 Termagants to access as Troop choice. Just like Tyrant no more Biomancy. Only spawns Termagants with no upgrades. No longer shares biomorph upgrades (Adrenal Glands & Toxin Saces) with nearby Termagants.
Thoughts: Loss of Biomany again not good. The increase in cost I believed was necessary, and I applaud the increase for the 30 Termagant requirement. I always disliked lists that spammed Tervigons with buffed gaunts running rampant. Still mostly the same.

Tyranid Prime
Stats = same
Points = +45
Upgrades: Mostly the same. The 'nerf' to boneswords was expected (now Str: User, AP: 3, cause ID on wound roll of 6. Lashwhips now add +3 to Initiative). Still buffs warriors.
Thoughts: The increase in cost I am NOT happy with here. Unless there is some rule I am missing here I forsee my Primes not seeing much action.

Deathleaper
Stats = same
Points = -10
Upgrades: Requires snap shots to hit. Overall the same. Lost a few rules. Still -D3 Ld to one model. Still has most of the abilities of a Lictor (Flesh Hooks no longer rending...).
Thoughts: Interesting that they moved Deathleaper to HQ, but to be honest I think it's a good move.

Old One Eye
Stats = same
Points = -40
Upgrades: Regen is now on a +4. Gear is the same.
Thoughts: Meh....

Tyrant Guard
Stats = same
Points = -10
Upgrades: Can be upgraded with Crushing Claws now ( S: User +1, AP:2, Unwieldy, Armorbane).
Thoughts: Upgrades are expensive. The point of TG is to absorb fire. Will still use my models. No need to buy new ones with fancy (worthless) upgrades.

Troops

Warriors
Stats = same
Points = same
Upgrades: Flesh hooks are back. No eternal warrior. Adrenal glands are more expensive (grant Furious Charge and Fleet). Toxin sacs cheaper. Boneswords and Lashwhips slight nerf (see above).
Thoughts: No way to stop them from dying to Str 8 fire which is dissapointing but not the end of the world. Loss of spore pod really sucks as now the only real way of delivery for an assault unit might be Hive Commander and outflank a squad.

Termagants
Stats = same
Points = -1
Upgrades: Spinefists/Spikerifles now free. Devourers same stats with only +4 per model. Strangleweb is still worthless.
Thoughts: Still good and now cheaper... My hand will get tired from painting more...

Hormagaunts
Stats = same
Points = -1
Upgrades: Scything Talons are now S: User, AP: 6. No longer re-roll 1's (SUCK). Toxin sacs more expensive. Adrenal glands same. Adds +3" to run move (similar to Banshees)
Thoughts: Still good and now cheaper. No option to spawn more. Loss of re-rolls with Scything Talons is a big hit and the increase for adrenal glands is weird....

Rippers
Stats = same
Points = +3
Upgrades: Don't care
Thoughts: Garbage. Increased costs, can't score, still slow, but WAIT.... you can buy the ability to Deep Strike again!!! -_-

Genestealers
Stats = same
Points = same
Upgrades: Scything Talons now +4 per model. All tyranids can add +1 attack when model has 2 sets of 'melee' biomorphs hence the increase in cost. Still can't assault when outflanking. No increases to armor saves. Broodlord I believe is 10 points cheaper. Mastery level 1, only knows "the Horror" psychic power. Stats similar.
Thoughts: still fodder for bolters. Mostly shelved.

Elites

Hive Guard
Stats = +1 WS (WTF), -1 BS (REALLY GW WTF!!!)
Points = +5 (saw that coming)
Upgrades: No Skyfire... Impaler Cannon the same. New Shockcannon = 18" S:5, AP:5 Assault 1 Blast, Haywire.
Thoughts: Still decent units but no longer auto includes. New gun option in my opinion is worthless. MC's can tear open heavy armor and blasts can't target flyers so what's the point...

Lictors
Stats = same
Points = -15!!!
Upgrades: Mostly the same. Now can infiltrate and be on board turn 1 which solves the 'Locater Beacon' issues of 5th edition. Loss of rending on Flesh Hooks. No +1 to reserve rolls. No scatter if deep striking. Still no assault on appearance.
Thoughts: Cheaper Lictors is great, but the rules are still not in their favor. Locator beacon issue will help Mawloc's. Might run them now though considering the point reduction.

Zoanthropes
Stats = same
Points = -10
Upgrades: No more access to different Psychic powers. Comes with Warp Blast standard (2 modes again, similar stats for profiles). Can't change powers. Rolls 1 Psychic test for ALL.
Thoughts: The loss of pods make this unit hard to utilize due to their short range. Overall meh.

Pyrovores
Stats = +1 W, +1 I, +1 A
Points = same
Upgrades: Still same flamer attack. Acid Maw attack is now sacrifice all attacks for 1 S: 5, AP: 2 attack... -_-. No Torrent. Still explode. Still suck.
Thoughts: I hate you Cruddance.

Haruspex
Stats = similar to Tervigon but with 5 W, 3 I. Only 3 attacks.
Points = 160
Upgrades: Has a 'Gulp' gun which sucks. Can't eat units. Gains an attack for each W it is missing. Gains back 1 W for a model killed in melee (max 1 per turn).
Thoughts: Just to make Nidzilla players happy. I hate tentacle porn. Shelved.

Venomthropes
Stats = -1 BS (does it matter? wait... nope)
Points = -10
Upgrades: Now grants 'Shrouded' instead of automatic +5 cover. No more dangerous terrain when enemy assaults. Melee abilities the same (still +2 poison attacks).
Thoughts: Cheaper and better cover saves. Sign me up for 2-3.

Fast Attack

Raveners
Stats: -1 A
Points: same
Upgrades: Mostly the same. Rending claws are now (S: User, AP: 5, Rending). Gun upgrades are slightly cheaper (for spinefists at least!). Still no Toxin or Adrenal upgrades. Can upgrade 1 model to the 'Red Terror.' Stats similar to Alpha Warrior with only a +4 armor save. Can eat a model with 4 melee hits however inv. saves are allowed. Has a tail weapon attack.
Thoughts: Red Terror is nice to be back but not necessary. Still decent but again suffer from problems that Warriors face.

Gargoyles
Stats: same
Points = same
Upgrades: Adrenal and Toxin now more expensive. Blinding Venom is now S: User (Poison +6), AP: -, Blind. Have to sacrifice all melee attacks to use just 1 Blinding Venom attack... suck.

Harpy
Stats: +1 W, +1 A
Points: 135
Upgrades: Shriek is now -5 to enemy I. No more Spore Mine Drops.
Thoughts: Not quite the new hotness but drop in points is nice. Still fodder for almost all guns.

Shrikes
Stats: same
Points: -5
Upgrades: same as Warriors.
Thoughts: Cheaper now. Could be useful for fast Synapse.

Crone
Stats: same as Harpy
Points: 155
Upgrades: Drool Cannon (S:6, AP:4, Template, not Torrent). 4 'Tentaclide' Missiles (S:5, AP:5, Assault 1, One Use, Haywire). Has a S 8 Vector Strike!!
Thoughts: Still vulnerable to guns just like Harpy but might bring some nice abilities to a well rounded Tyranid force.

Sky-Slashers
Stats: These are still here???
Points: Who cares!
Upgrades: Your mom...
Thoughts: I like puppies.

Spore Mines
Don't care here...

Heavy Support

Trygon
Stats: -1 A
Points: -10
Upgrades: Tunnel not fixed. 2x Scything Talons now just grant +1 attack so loss of base attack in profile is a wash I believe. No more re-rolls with them though.
Thoughts: Loss of re-rolls sucks, tunnel still sucks, but still a heavy hitter.

Trygon Prime
Stats: same as Trygon
Points: -10
Upgrades: see Trygon
Thoughts: Synapse is a bit more important now. Glad I built 2 and skipped on the standard Trygon.

Mawloc
Stats: same
Points: -30!!
Upgrades: same as before. Can't burrow turn 1 (forces you to keep in reserve). Terror from the Deep now ignores cover (FINALLY).
Thoughts: Cheaper, ignores cover. Might make 1 standard now.

Carnifex
Stats: +1 I (strikes before Powerfists!!!... unless you put on Crushing Claws...)
Points -40!!!
Upgrades: Tail weapons are back (2 options for Carnifexi, some for Tyrant, Red Terror and Alpha as well, nothing too special though). No +2 save. Now D3 Hammer of Wrath hits.
Thoughts: Cheaper is better! Still don't know the cost (or possibility) of regeneration. Might see broods of these on the table again.

Biovore
Stats: +1 W
Points: -5
Upgrades: No new Spore mines. Same old, same old.
Thoughts: Cheaper, slightly more resilient and awesome vs. infantry. Sign me up for 3!

Tyrannofex
Stats: +1 I
Points: -75!!!!
Upgrades: same, except Fleshborer Hive is now 18"!!!
Thoughts: Much cheaper!!! Hive now longer range!!! Goodbye infantry!!!

Exocrine
Stats: similar to Haruspex
Points:170
Upgrades: Comes with Bio Cannon (S: 7, AP:2, 24" Assault 6 or 5" Large Blast). +1 BS if remains stationary.
Thoughts: The new hotness. Not bad for taking out heavy infantry at range and finally some guns better than AP 4 (Warp Blast/Lance excluded)!!!

Conclusion:

Granted I don't have the complete codex in hand but the leaks so far merit a slight boon to the Tyranids.

Pros:
1) Cheaper, Cheaper, Cheaper
2) Most units are viable
3) Hordes are back.

Cons:
1) No more Biomancy/Telekinesis.
2) No more pods
3) Terrible Warlord Trait table
4) Sub-par Psychic Powers
5) No increased Force org chart to compensate for lack of allies

There are still multiple areas and errors that were not addressed (Deathspitters on MC's for instance) but overall I'm somewhat satisfied with the codex. I know I might be in the minority, but I didn't want a codex that had 'Insta-win' written all over.
So to begin the new year let us get started with one awesome and long awaited post...

Tyranids are back baby!!

New codex, models (mostly) and psychic powers. Overall upon reading multiple rumors and now after seeing the actual models I can honestly say this has been my favorite release for sixth edition thus far. Harpy at long last has a model and the alternate build for the Crone, the new AA flying monstrous creature also looks really nice. The one kit I am not too please with is the new Exocrine/Haruspex combo kit. I feel that the designers fell a bit flat and dry with these sculpts. The Exocrine looks like a Termgant and a Biovore had a kid and pumped it full of steroids. The stance and detail just aren't as dynamic as most for me. The Haruspex looks just... weird... The mouth and multiple tentacles although definitely unique and different, just don't look right.

The new Hive Guard/Tyrant Guard kit is a welcome addition, with a new gun option for the Hive Guard and all weapon options (as well as the new crushing claws) for the Tyrant Guard. At first glance with the leaked photos I wasn't a fan of either sculpt but the fact they are now in plastic I can't complain. The Warriors look overall to be a nice rehash of the old 3rd edition sculpts that I love so much. Now with options to finally equip the warriors with all weapon biomorphs it looks like my 30+ warriors will look a bit outdated now.

As for the codex, I have seen some leaked images and rules but so far won't comment on that until I see the codex in its entirety. My hope is that Tyranids will somehow bring assault back into 6th edition and help to curb multiple lists that currently rule the tabletop.

Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-33945039274670657892012-08-24T16:21:00.001-07:002012-08-24T16:21:52.630-07:006th Edition ShennanigansHello all,

So it has been a while since any update has been done here. I wanted to reassure everyone that this is not for a lack of work on hobbies but rather time to post. I will try and make a better effort to post in the near future.

To begin with 6th Edition has hit the shelves for 40k in July and the game has again changed in my opinion for the better. There are a few areas that I have been scratching my head over but overall I am impressed and quite entertained with the new rules. It appears that the majority of the armies got a sizeable boost to their competiveness while scaling back some armies which were full of "win" at the end of 5th.

I have managed to play a couple of games so far with 2 victories thus far. As far as my Tyranids are concerned the new rules have helped them compete again. Making tanks more vulnerable, longer assault ranges, stronger monstrous creatures, psychic powers and the removal of fearless wounds have all contributed to the bugs being more effective. Some drawbacks include not being able to assault when outflanking. weaker cover saves, Tyranid lack of allies & fortifications, inability to deal with flyers and the introduction of overwatch.

For B, the Craftworld Eldar got some boosts and hits as well and considering they are using a 4th edition codex it is rumored their update could be in early 2013 after Chaos & Dark Angels.

For Eldar Dire Avengers, Guardians, Rangers, and 10 man Wraithguard squads are your best bet as I have seen Eldar players play 2-3 Dire Avenger squads with 2-3 Guardian squads for troops with the occasional Ranger unit. Since most missions are
objective based having lots of scoring units is a must.

Eldar with their psychic powers are king as they have access to the Divination discipline which is arguably the best out of the five available disciplines (only Imp. Guard, Dark Angels and Grey Knights also have access here). Eldar psychic defense is unrivaled even by Space Puppies or Bugz (3D6 on Ld tests board wide = win). Seer Councils will now become much more common and Eldrad is just insane.

With shooting being king in this addition some assault units have been shelved. Banshees are fairly ineffective now (AP 3 power weapons, can't assault out of a Wave Serpent on the same turn when they disembark and fairly weak) but Harlequins (insane cover saves, wound allocation and ally rules) and Striking Scorpions (improved cover saves, fleet not as necessary, lots of attacks, better armor, infiltrate) are pretty nice. Warp Spiders (AP - weapons don't suffer vs. Vehicles) and even Shining Spears (Hit and Run = awesome, Jetbikes are op with 36" turbo-boost and assault turn move of 2D6", +4 'jink' save from shooting which is improved to 3+ with Skilled Rider) are up but Swooping Hawks are still worthless (aside from having Haywire Gernades which are much better in 6th).

I foresee Support Weapon Platforms making a comeback as Artillery are now considering T:7 W:2 Sv:3+ units each. Stick them in cover and they will be hard to remove. Wraithlords will be nice as effective gun platforms rather than assault beasts while Wraithguard in my opinion are best as a 10 man squad Troop choice outfitted with a Warlock and a Farseer nearby.

The vehicles in 6th have become both weaker due to the introduction of hull points (similar to wounds) but have also become stronger by being able to shoot more often (Snap shots even when moving fast). All Eldar vehicles gain a 4+ jink save if they move 6" or more and benefit from a less scary damage table. Falcons have reemerged in 6th as the go to tank with weight of fire, transport capacity, and less need for vehicle upgrades (more later). Fire Prisms/Nightspinners are in my opinion better than 5th as it is more difficult to destroy their primary weapon and therefore make them ineffective. Glancing hits no longer just stun or shake the vehicle so they can fire at full effectiveness in your turn. However if a penetrating hit is scored watch out, as AP 1&2 weapons get +2&+1 respectively to the damage roll. Holofields and spirit stones are no longer a must buy but are still worth considering. Vypers despite having only 2 hull points each have become a bit better under 6th in squads of 2-3. Wave Serpents are no longer super amazing but are a decent transport/fire support tank. The inability to contest objectives on the last turn and loss of same turn assaults after disembarking have hurt this tank considerably.

Overall Eldar are slightly better off and have some nice allies (Tau & Dark Eldar) which they can use to supplement their current weaknesses until a codex is released.

As for J and his Necrons... I am just disgusted. Necrons were the final 5th edition codex and were definately written with 6th edition in mind. Necrons are all about shooting and their gauss and tesla weapons are terrifying to behold.

Necrons might not be able to access psychic powers but that is a minor drawback considering their boosts in 6th. As one of the only armies which have access to the new "flyer" units, Necrons have a current strength in being able to field an all flyer list.

Doom Scythes and Night Scythes are just amazing in 6th until other armies are able to counter flyers through the use of fortifications, other flyers, and skyfire weapons.

The lowly warrior can cause glancing hits against all armor types on a penetrating roll of 6 and therefore can easily dispatch any vehicle to come into range. Not too mention rapid fire weapons (Bolters, Gauss Rifles, Tau Pulse Rifles) now can move and still double tap (fire twice up to half the gun's max range) resulting in 40 shots for a maxed out warrior squad if their target is 12" away. This makes assaulting this unit very scary due to the overwatch rules.

Scarbs, Wraiths, Warriors, Barges, Scythes all got substantial boosts with the rest of the army still getting help.

I hope to be able to play some more games and get the most out of this edition. Until then good luck out there!

The models that tyranid players needed when the codex originally dropped. (facepalm) If only GW had the wisdom to release the models in with a well written codex they might have seen a wider range in armies used at tournaments besides MEQ or IG.

Enough ranting... Overall I am pleased with the models look and feel. Thank god the Tervigon and Tyrannofex are a dual kit. If they had released a separate kit for that I would be dissapointed. It's too bad that my conversions now finally have been replaced by licensed GW products.

The Plastic Flyrant is a great addition and a welcome one too. Sad that my Flyrant (pewter) is still in construction and is a project for the ages. With the release of the plastic kit, I am unsure whether or not my time converting a new one will be time well spent.

BONESWORD/LASHWHIP KITS! These are so late in arriving it's not even funny. I instead had to purchase an extra Venomthrope to salvage enough lashwhips for my Warriors, and the boneswords I snagged from an independent sculptor.

Lastly the plastic Swarmlord/Tyrant kit is a long time coming. That being said I am a bit disappointed with the Swarmlord model. I think that my conversion or similar conversions using the classic boneswords are better.

Anyways... anyone else have some thoughts??Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-29816517551227991222012-02-13T15:45:00.000-08:002012-02-13T16:43:31.073-08:00Hobby UpdateAlas the past year many things have happened in our lives. Weddings, deployments, new puppies, etc. That being said I thought it would be smart to bring back a quick update on my hobby frivolities.

1) Tyranids - I have done some painting on the bugs over the past few months. I finished base coating all the models I have assembled, as well as completing my Tervigon, Tyrannofex, a group of Raveners, a Mawloc, and now I'm finishing up my Swarmlord. Next up will be to finish some Termagants and Hormagaunts.

2) Rohirrim - I have almost completely finished painting all my LOTR figs. I have about 20 figs left mostly characters that I will rarely use (Boromir, Gandalf, etc.) That means in the past year I have painted roughly 80 figs.

3) Wood Elves - I have started putting the finishing touches on my converted Treekin unit. I have 3 finished now with a plan for 3 more. I also pulled out my converted Treeman which is in the early stages of construction.

4) Eldar - I pulled out my casting gear and have begun to setup for my first casting of the custom bases that I constructed.

Cheers!Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-68596597388910393552011-08-02T05:38:00.000-07:002011-08-02T06:20:52.106-07:00Custom TableWe're still working on the table. BUT at the end of the day (or whenever we finish it) we'll have a badass table to use.

Workbench: cutting planks for the ship and molding tiles for the table.

Table Construction

Stairs

Part of the board has a retraining wall that will have a road and stairs leading up to it. Tim (I sent out the pictures of the house he was building) and I are building a board to submit to a scenario tournament. Best board wins. Like wildfire the news will spread between popular blogs and websites. Granted the most vocal people (the ones with websites) aren't always the best informed or even have best perspective of the event they are commenting on. I like to think that by reading several different sites I'll get a better idea of the whole picture.

The sad fact is, you do not, in fact, get a better picture. You get a bunch of poorly informed fans screaming into the guano strewn, dank bat-cave that is the Internet. Why you stepped into the putrid hole we'll never know. Perhaps you thought there would be a kernel of truth amid all the offal?

What I have learned is that everyone can really be broken down into two camps: 1. pillars of frothing rage vs. 2. melancholy indifference.

The later category might be the most intriguing because of their sad and resigned tone; as if they were expecting this sort of behavior and have become inured to it.

The first group, the angry crowd, tend to focus on how GW is destroying themselves as a company. These posts generally read like a date who was dumped before prom night, someone in the throws of a "deep relationship" who has suddenly and unceremoniously been blown out of the water by the other person's behavior.

A bit of advice, sugar, is GW doesn't love you, it is not your friend, it is and always will be a business with shareholders to appease.

I do not have a business degree. I know enough about money to handle my own finances. As such I am free to comment about the business practices of GW my words ring a little hollow with my amateur-at-best understanding.

Despite this, though, there is an underlying theme of general dissent and displeasure about the company even from some of the more stalwart apologists. However, despite that GW's business practices have paid off because I believe they posted record (for their recent trend at any rate) earnings.

Let's get a few things straight though: we are a niche market. The demand for this particular product is low. Most people who wander into a GW store think they sell traditional board games (Monopoly, Scrabble, etc) and often walk away confused or chortling, "NERDS!" as they walk back to their SUV's. This is not a poor man's hobby. Even if you somehow manage to scratch build an entire force you're still going to sink a significant amount of cash into the project, nevermind time.

Then you have all of the other miniature companies who are not raising their prices.

What. Does. That. Mean?

I don't know but it upsets everyone to the point that many are flocking to other gaming systems. A friend of mine is a long time 40K player. He jumped ship to Flames of War and Privateer Press in response and he is not alone!

Only time will tell what happens. It would be hard to imagine a world without GW. But a franchise THAT big does not go down easily.
Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045336235383379604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-83958240565362313082011-04-06T10:40:00.001-07:002011-04-06T10:41:35.259-07:00Tomb Kings!Models are up for advance order! New plastic kits for Tomb Guard, and 2 new units in the form of Cobra cavalry, and a giant ass Sphinx!!!Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-49068069175170443272011-03-22T16:48:00.000-07:002011-03-22T17:06:54.648-07:00Update!!So it has been quite a while since my last post/update so I figured I would throw one up. I have been busy as all get out with Tax season here so I haven't had much time to myself over the past 2 months. Needless to say I have plenty of planning going on in my head. So to begin here is what I have been up to hobby wise over the past few months.

1) Tyranid Models - Wave #2!!! Rumors are around and the thought is they should be released sometime around summer to early fall, before another codex release (possibly Necrons!!!). Models are going to include the following...

Confirmed: Warrior Lashwhip/bonesword sprues, Ymgarl Genestealers (pewter blister or upgrade pack), Doom of Malan'tai (pewter blister), Harpy (plastic kit, to be released with the 'summer of fliers alongside the Imperial Thunderbolt fighter, Dark Eldar Voiddragon/Razorwing).

Speculation: Tervigon/Tyrannofex (2 in 1 kit, like the Night Spinner/Fire Prism, however some believe this to be a hoax and that only the Tervigon will be released), PLASTIC HIVE TYRANT/SWARMLORD (hell it's about time!!! also wings/armored shell upgrades are said to be included!!!

Either way more models = more conversions and finally after a two years we get our model range complete, thanks GW! It only took two years, and in that time Blood Angels got all of their kits, DE in six months almost have their whole range & you threw in Grey Knights in April!!! Man you must really love the Xenos races.......

2) Battlefoam - I purchased some for myself and B to see if the product works. Despite the price the product looks like it will work quite well. It's hard with Nids to find a way to transport your bugs due to the sizes and shapes/conversions of all the various models. I have found other cheaper options online, but Battlefoam trays are customized for specific types of bugs with options to design your own trays. I ordered a ton to house roughly 80-85% of my bugs and a few trays for B for his eldar. They should be shipped out soon as the email said they will be sent by the end of March.... here's to hoping since I bought them in February.

3) Conversions - I am redoing part of my Swarmlord, more specifically the arms to make them more seamless. Winged Warriors are in the works! I have started both a Farseer conversion and an Autuarch conversion for my Eldar. To top it all off I have toyed around with the Gryphon that J sent me and have come up with some ideas for a Pheonix!! (More to come here)

4) Painting - I honestly need to do more... that's all I have to say about that...

5) Grey Knights - I... hate.... GW...

6) Dark Eldar - Wave 3 models to be released soon!!

7) Tomb Kings in May!!!!

8) Necrons in the fall!?!?!

9) I still hate GW..... Brian and Garrett. This is a report of my first ever Warmachine battle! Neither of you play this game but it is fantastic and awesome (and cheaper).

Game: learning phase. Set-up and fight. I represent the forces of Cryx, lead by the Warwitch Deneghra. My opponent played the kingdom of Cygnar lead by the Commander Stryker. Players roll and highest picks to go first or second. First turn also deploys first.

As you can see here we have a large factory on the right, a couple of silos on the left, a lone leafless tree in the middle. Forces deploy up to 10" away from their edge and 20" away from each other. The board is usually 4x4'.

In Warmachine one of the ways to win (if the mission has other ways) is to kill off the opposing warcaster (general). This is not as easy as it sounds! Each warcaster has the warjacks assigned to them. These steampunk engines of war have a magic-mechanical brain that responds to warcasters commands. Without the warcaster they become inert. Troop units can operate independently but can be aided by the warcaster via buffs or allocation of the game's central mechanic: focus.

Think of focus like mana. A warcaster can channel it into their own spells or directly into their warjacks or troops to make them more effective. Part of the game becomes a balancing act of using focus for spells, helping crucial units perform actions and getting your warjacks to wreak havoc on the battlefield.

While a warcaster is strong, they aren't the unit killing monsters like 40K characters. They aren't completely fragile but you have to calculate the risks you take with them.

I rolled higher so I deployed first to go first.

Turn 1 Cryx:

My units are directly from the Cryx battlebox. A cheap box that gives you the basic components to play the game: warcaster, units, unit stats, and basic game rules! You don't need the main rulebook to start playing! The starter rules are abridged to make it easier. Cards come with the units so you can mark damage on them (as applicable).

Cryx warjacks are light bonejacks (defiler is a shooter and deathrippers are close combat) which are fast and agile vs. the heavy helljacks (slayer is slightly slower but tougher and packs a wallop). Deneghra is a lithe, fast, debuffing witch very capable of dishing out damage but not as good at taking it.

Turn one had me running everything up and since nothing was in range (defiler has short range) I couldn't do anything.

Cygnar turn 1:
Stryker and his jacks run up. The Defender is a heavy with a gun and hammer. The Sentinel is a light with a gun and shield. The stormblades are troops wearing armor and wielding these sword pikes that shoot lightning. They start to go to town on my deathripper. The other two jacks aren't as effective at shooting me.

Turn 2: Cryx
Fun times here: on the left Deneghra casts a damage spell called Scourge: it hits a target then a 3" AoE knocks everything around it (friend of foe) down. Being knocked down in this game is bad. Close combat hits automatically, on your turn to get up you have to sacrifice your movement or your action, etc.

You'll notice the spell arrow goes through the deathripper. Many bonejacks have an arc node which allows casters to channel spells through the 'jack. This keeps the caster out of harms way while spells rip open the enemy and your deathripper runs in and kills everyone! Almost.

My slayer rushes the defender and slams it causing it to fly back into Stryker causing some damage to both and knocking them down.

Cygnar:
Here the stormblades get back up and countercharge using some of Stryker's focus. (Kinda)Check the forgeworld website!!!

New Eldar units released for the upcoming Imperial Armor 11!

New Aspect Warriors, the Shadow Spectres, and the new Grav-tank, the Warp Hunter.

The rules are linked below in the description. Overall I would say that while the intention for the units are cool, I feel that they just don't quite cut it as far as competitive units. Here are my arguments why.

Shadow Spectres:

1) 35 pts a model!?!? - Just like everything in the eldar codex, these guys are another OVER costed unit. I see the need to make them similar in points to Dark Reapers, but I was hoping that they would be more aligned to be a preview of the next Eldar codex as far as points values go. Running the numbers I found a full squad of 5 with Exarch Cynosure, and EMP Launcher to be 212 points!!! Keep in mind these guys are supposed to be an Anti-tank unit. For 212 points I can think of all other races and their equivalent choices and the sheer amount of firepower that they can produce versus these fragile pea shooters.

2) Not enough shots - Even if you upgrade the exarch to carry the EMP launcher thats still only 2 anti tank shots from a single unit per turn. IMO that's not enough, especially to warrant their high point cost.

3) Battlefield role?? - These guys were designed to be long ranged anti-tank support, a particular part of warfare the current aspects don't cover. I think these guys just don't cut it as far as being able to compete with other choices in the Eldar list for killing tanks. Yes the range is good, and the ability to use Jet-packs is great but again, durability and lack of shots are their downfall. Fire Dragons are way more efficient (perhaps overkill), a shooty Wraithlord is more durable, EML Wave Serpents handle smaller mech (Rhinos, Razorbacks, Chimeras) just fine, with Vypers, Warp Spiders, or any other Str 6 shooting able to do the trick as well.

4) Another Heavy Support choice!?!?! WTF! - Again, Eldar are thee most heavy support 'heavy' army in the game. With Reapers, Wraithlords, Support Weapons, Fire Prisms, Nightspinners, Falcons, War Walkers, and now Spectres and Warp Hunters.

All in all we'll have to play test them to see if they are effective in their designed roles or not. I am skeptical, but I must admit the models and fluff are badass. However I have said the same thing about other models.... <cough> Pyrovore <cough>

Warp Hunter:

Finally!! A D Cannon on a Vehicle, besides the retarded support weapon!! Not to mention a greater range of 36", blast (meh), and barrage!!! Add on top of that the awesome secondary fire mode and fire it like a Hellhound and you have a D Cannon FLAMER!!!! Mwahahahaha!!!

Overall the concept for these guys are great. I have some problems with them though.

1) BS 3..... <sigh> - Someday the designers will realize that the Eldar are supposed to be the most advanced race in the galaxy and should be able to shoot better than a freakin' human.

2) One hit wonder - This tank suffers the same problems that Night Spinners, and Prisms have. 1 BIG weapon. Lose it and the tank is effectively useless. Not to mention with a AV of 12 it isn't all that hard to stun or shake the tank and stop it from shooting all together.

3) Blast..... really.... just a blast template?!? - The D Cannon is supposed to be a Black Hole gun for crying out loud!!! Make it a 5" template and I would have been happy since that is more in line with the rest of the Apocalypse Eldar that have been released thus far (Cobra has a 7" D Cannon blast.... it is one of the most efficient and effective tanks in large games). Also I think Invulnerable saves shouldn't be allowed against these weapons, but that is just my take on it.... Somehow an energy shield can save you from the forces of gravity!

4) Yet again.. another Heavy Support - Nuff Said.

Overall the model is awesome and the template attack option pretty much makes this tank really shine! Albeit suicidal...

I think this is a step in the right direction as far as Eldar design should go. More aspects, more tanks and next more psychic stuff!!Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-57938114365166630812011-01-04T12:23:00.000-08:002011-01-04T12:30:05.217-08:00Niffty Spore Pod/Happy New Year/Tyranid thoughtsFirst up, I found this while I was browsing the other night. Here is to another great year!

Third, I have been planning to purchase my own 'Battlefoam' so that I can transport my precious Nids without damaging them. I know the foam is expensive but I have found that with Tyranids they have too many eccentric arms, unusual poses, and spiky bitz that tend to make standard pluck foam or regular foam trays useless (Hormagaunts are a pain). I hope to have the foam by the upcoming tourney so I can transport my bugs in style/protection.

The first 3 Tyranid Shrikes have their wings and are ready to create havoc on the battlefield! The list is designed to act as a giant bio-ball of units moving together to maximize effectiveness. I designed it to confront Dark Eldar (which I expect will be about 50% of the people at the tourney), Space Marines of all types (probably going to see lots of Blood Angels, with a few Wolves), as well as Imp. Guard. I believe in creating a list using a variety of units in order to see if my opponent is smart enough to target the right threats. Remember we can have 1 additional force org. chart slot for all choices (i.e. 3 HQ's, 7 Troops, 4 Elites, etc.). I also wanted to try and include as many of my painted models as possible. I've got several things I want to go over before I leave for San Diego for all next week:

1. The gift that keeps on giving: my nephew is being inducted into bloodbowl and he's looking at a chaos army. No bloodbowl chaos army is complete without a minotaur! Looking at the available models at Games Workshop I have to say I was a little disappointed. GW's minotaurs are big but the biggest of them is metal and I don't care for the way the hooves look. SO, to remedy that I looked at Privateer Press's Circle Oroboros Gnarlhorn Satyr. He's big, he's mean, he's got armor so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to put him out on the field to start smashing face.

The model itself is actually quite tall, at least twice the height of a standard trooper. He comes on the 60mm wide circle base so I had to fish out one of my smaller ones for bloodbowl purposes. There was a minimum of flash so I didn't have to spend hours carving off metal bits (he is metal but Privateer Press is slowly changing to plastic).

I had a week (sort of) to assemble him, paint him so he would be ready before I left (tomorrow). My nephew likes the Philadelphia Eagles, evidently. So I painted him a green and white overlay. Not quite the teal but we'll see how it goes over. I made a helmet out of plasticard and green putty... which turned out o.k. I guess. Then I added the "3".

Paint-wise I tried layering here on the skin with a shadowy skin tone, then medium, then highlights then a brown ink. The ink probably should have been watered down a little but the dark skin gives a nice contrast to the white and green armor. I did the same thing with the horns and hooves.

The base was flocked with sand and I tried to make it look like a football field.

Let's hope he likes it!

In other news, remember how I was going to make a completely scratch built demons army?

Here's the cunnin' plan: I'm going to have to mold these two, then take the first casting and carve it down a little and re-size things then make my own spru of the individual pieces, re-mold it then I'll have something. This isn't ideal but neither are my sculpts right now. The baked clay pieces are just so incredibly brittle and making fine details are a hell of a lot harder than I thought they would be. Also you really can't cut up the originals after they are baked.

There is an oil based clay I could use that you CAN NOT bake but it is stronger and thus easier to work with and better for molding. Or I could just use green stuff. Oh well, work in progress.

Also, remember that big jaws thing. I found a home for it:

Feed me Seymour!

Merry Christmas, see you all later!

Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045336235383379604noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-2339844118423682162010-12-06T08:40:00.000-08:002010-12-06T15:53:33.920-08:00(Cricket sounds)Sooo,

I haven't heard or seen any new updates from anyone recently so I guess I will start. 40k wise I haven't had much spare time to get any more painting done. With my recent move to the Olympia/Lacey area I am just now getting resettled. On top of the fact that work is starting to get a bit more busy this month my painting time has been severely reduced.

The only thing I have worked on is my Tyrannofex which I worked on over Thanksgiving. It is about 75% complete with a good 4 more hours of work left to go. (sigh)

Over the break B and I managed a few games which ended with a Victory with the Nids and a close fought draw for the second game.

My list building/play testing is still being tinkered with.

What about you guys??Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-11305447644739576002010-11-15T10:20:00.000-08:002010-11-15T10:58:31.366-08:00Army List IdeasThe GW store here in Tacoma is doing a 3000 point tourney in January and to prepare for this onslaught not only am I painting but I have been throwing around list ideas in my head as well. The rules for the tourney are basically mini-Apocalypse games. You aren't allowed Stompas or Baneblades but instead you get 1 extra slot for each place on the force organization chart. (3 HQ's, 7 Troops, 4 Heavies..., etc.).

With the release of the Dark Eldar codex I have played a majority of my recent games versus this new threat and find that Tyranids and Mechanized armies tend to be slaughtered. I know that a large amount of players are going to be bringing Dark Eldar to the match up so I have been trying to develop a list using the Nids I have, primarily the ones I have painted, in order to combat these space pirates.

Any thoughts / ideas??? With 3000 points it is really easy to start to load up on particular units but those points tend to disappear fast.Brewmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04888855081039581748noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015752593736451935.post-11097316150326689072010-11-13T12:39:00.000-08:002010-11-13T14:47:14.748-08:00Molding and Casting Tutorial or the Blind Leading the BlindStep 1: Turn back now while you still can! Okay? Seriously...

Still here? Wow, alright then. Keep in mind I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing either but this is what I have learned so far through trial and error.

Step Two: PLANNING, sure it sounds like a good idea now but the reality is probably more insane than you anticipated.

You're going to need:

Mat/table covering/cheap cutting board - something to keep all the chemicals from spilling onto your workspace.

Plastic/rubber gloves - don't let this stuff touch your skin.

Ventilated area/hazmat suit - don't breathe this stuff.

Disposable strong stirrers - I use tongue depressors.

Dixie/paper/see-through plastic cups - for mixing.

Small measuring cups - try to find something disposable or something that will be dedicated to this process forever.

Plasticard - go to a hardware store and get some 'For Sale' signs, see below.

Clay/stopgap material.

Rulers and pens - for measuring.

Your custom model, mold and casting mixtures.

A plan - what the hell are you really trying to accomplish? Why are you making multiples of this thing? Do you REALLY need to make multiples of this thing?

So let's start with something simple aka something I actually made that didn't end in disaster: custom bases.

So you made some custom bases and you'd like to make them over and over again consistently say, for your whole army or whatever.

Step three: planning the mold. This is a lot more difficult than I originally thought it would be.

A mold needs:

to be a stable piece that allows you to pour a casted material into it without spilling or creating unnecessary mold lines or flak lines on the model.

to allow easy access to the casted piece. If it is a pain in the ass to get the original piece out you can guarantee the casted piece will have the same problem.

I found that drawing out a design works best.

Step four: a box for the mold. Since you are pouring liquid around the model you'll need to be able to contain it. You need a box to contain the model and it needs to be the right dimensions so go buy yourself a ruler and a protractor, maybe even one of those fancy rulers that has a built-in right angle so you can accurately make corners.

For materials I would NOT use cardboard! Of course, if you're any sort of scientist you'll just measure in metric and realize 1 cm^3 = 1 mL and it's an easy day. Otherwise you can convert your measurements via Google if need be. You could try to determine the volume by merely pouring water into your box and then measuring the amount of water with the model in it. I wouldn't recommend this tactic... Unless your model is huge I wouldn't bother with this because you'll need a little extra anyways to cover your model entirely. With the bases this is rather straight-forward: take the entire mold out of the box (this might require you to destroy said box) and flip it over. Since you had the bases face-down that is what you should be seeing: the bases facing up at you with their tops inside the mold. Pop them out and see if anything has gone amiss:
If you look closely at the top row 1st and 3rd from the left bases you can see that there is mold material stuck inside the original model. The irregular arrangement of edges or your careless hands have cause bits of the mold to break off into the model. As of yet this can not be repaired as far as I can tell. The skull base (2nd row, 2nd from the left) also has some of the mold in it.

Additionally there may be some edging or lines that aren't supposed to be there on the mold. You can clean these off this a knife but BE CAREFUL. One wrong deep cut will pierce right through the mold.

Also any problem you have getting the originals out will also happen with casting. For example I tried to make some custom skeleton parts and then cutting the mold in half to retrieve them. You can take your mold and sort of pick it up a little and drop it down to slam some of the bubbles out, be careful though.

Wait 10 minutes (you can actually see it change from clear to solid white and it heats up, NEAT).

Take out the casted piece just like you did with the originals:
Did it work? I buy everything here for now. There are LOTS of things you can do with their products and some neat tutorials. Be sure to read up on whatever you buy first or you'll end up with products you can't use properly!

They actually have a product called Sorta Clear that acts as a semitransparent mold mix so you can cut into it and SEE what you are doing rather than cutting a mold blindly. Problem? It requires to be degassed. Degassing vacuum chambers are stupid expensive (like $500 for the pump alone) so I wouldn't bother unless you get really serious about this process or you find something cheaper.

Hirst Arts: makes scenery molds and has some good tutorials as well as BRILLIANT things to make into REALLY customizable scenery.

Sersi's DakkaDakka custom army thread: details this cool cat Sersi's production of some FINE sculpts followed by making custom molds. I haven't entirely figured out how to duplicate the process but it is one of the better pictured productions that I've seen.

Well that's that. I'm trying to sculpt some models right now with the intention to mold them. I'll let you know how it all turns out!Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045336235383379604noreply@blogger.com2
