So J's post got me thinking about if I were to start another 40k army (which I won't be doing anytime soon) what would I play?
When it comes down to it I would try to make an army list for precisely 2000 points and never change the list again. It would have to be able to operate at 1000, 1250, 1500, 1850 points respectively as well. So let the debate begin...
Top choices:
1) Tau - I honestly have always had a thing with the look of the Tau. They are very sleek and could have some neat color schemes (Red/Black tiger stripes, Blue/Black tiger stripes, Camouflage of some sort.... etc.). I think the army overall is a bit behind/outdated when it comes to rules. The 5th edition rules with more armies opting to go with deep strike/outflank the static gun line Tau aren't nearly as effective. That being said they are definitely a tactical army (much like my wood elves) with very few units that are thee worst melee combatants in 40k.
2) Chaos Marines - Lets face it I hate Space marines, but if I were to make some marines what better marines than their evil arch enemies! Conversions here would be fun too!! I would probably run a Terminator heavy Chaos army with Obliterators, a tank or two, with lots of core troopers.
3) Eldar/Necrons. My last choice came in as a tie. I gotta say though that although I like Eldar they need more plastic kits before I would consider them. Ditto for Necrons but they also need a rules revamp....
So in conclusion it looks like Tau might be my second army in 40k down the round, but we shall see.

I almost started with the Tau. I think what stopped me was the fact that I wanted something that wasn't Toughness 3 and could actually handle close combat.
At any rate, IF I started Tau I would paint them themed to THIS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invader_Zim
It would be really interesting with all the dark purples, bright greens and pale pinks. Then you'd be able to add the other races the Irken have subverted as well as making the Tallest as your Etherials.
The drones could be little SIR units. Ah yeah.
I like the idea of your tiger stripes on the Tau, I think those would go over really nicely on the wide, flat ships and all the surface area of a battle suit. There is a lot of painting opportunities with that army.
That said, aren't the Kroot supposed to be the close combat pieces for that army? I was under the impression that you brough Tau to shoot and Kroot to fight?
Kroot are more cannon fodder than close combat specialists. They are fairly cheap... 7 pts per model. Their stat line if I remember is this.... WS 4, BS 3, S 4, T 3, I 4, A 1, Ld 7 or 8.. probably 7.... and NO save. They are armed with a somewhat weaker bolter... 24" Str 4, AP 6 , Rapid Fire gun. They can move through cover on 3D6. Infiltrate/Outflank, and can also put into their squads Kroot Hounds for extra CC punch or Krootox to deliver some more firepower with an Autocannon strapped to their back. If you give them the equivalent of a sargeant they get a 6+ save...... wooooo.......
Overall they are used to delay/harass the enemy and if you need to I would probably outflank with a unit of 20+ to see what kind of damage you can do.
